What could
make a dual wrestling meet take nearly two and a half hours? That question was
answered at Greencastle Wednesday night in the team regional competition.
Franklin defeated Bloomington South in the first round match that was more a
marathon than a wrestling match. Last Saturday, Franklin advanced all 14
wrestlers to individual regional competition. Bloomington South advanced 13 of
14. These were two deep, proud teams and they competed in that manner.
In a match
that began at 171 lbs., the early matches indicated this would be a struggle.
Franklin won three of the first five matches including a pin at the heavyweight
level. Still, they were competitive, give and take bouts. The key in this
battle began at 112 lbs. where the talented Dusty Kief began a string of five
consecutive Franklin decisions. It gave the Cubs a 27-8 advantage heading into
the final four matches.
Bloomington
South struck back with a major decision at 150 lbs. The Panthers were nonetheless
left needing to win each of the final three bouts by pin in order to reach even
on the scoreboard. They did win each of those bouts, but none were by fall.
Despite the charge, Franklin survived with a 27-21 verdict.
The Grizzly
Cubs advanced to face Perry Meridian in the finals where the powerful Falcons
romped to a 37-13 victory.
